Scouting Piney

11 08 2011

We took a Buffalo Joe’s training mission up to pine creek yesterday. At this water level there are three moves in the rapid. The entrance, the cave wave and the ‘S’ move. The ‘S’ move is last part of the rapid and leads the raft right into Pine Creek hole. At this water level you are really aiming to just smack the shit out of the hole really wherever you want to. The left is slightly munchier than to right but not to much of an issue as long as you are straight.

The entrance move, commercially you want to be just left of the domer

The second move in the rapid, the cave wave and probably the stoutest feature in the rapid at this water level. It is passed on the right

The famous 'S' move. Its all about pointing left and drifting, then squaring up for the hole!

Pine Creek Season is Good to Go

8 08 2011

Traditionally the Arkansas’ water cuts off on Aug. 15th. We are still waiting to see if that is actually going to happen this year. Regardless, just this week, better late than never, Buffalo Joe’s is starting to run Pine Creek trips. Pine Creek rapid is one of the last rapids in the Granite Gorge just before the Numbers put-in and is the only commercial class V rapid on the Ark. We don’t run up there above 1000 cfs, pine creek rapid’s commercial cut-off. Above piney is the Granite Gorge which is full of super-fun class III and IV rapids like Maytag and Bitchin’ el Camino. Give us a hollar if you want to get down, realistically it might only last a week!
