Low Water, High Spirits

11 06 2012

As fun as high water is here on the Arkansas River, low water is turning about to be a blast as well. I’ve been running a lot of trips in the Numbers as well as Brown’s and guests have been thrilled about both. The scenery hasn’t changed and I’ll tell you what, the Numbers definitely still drops 85′ a mile. You can feel every foot of that drop at 400cfs as it turns into a giant game of shoots and ladders. The fishing has also been exceptional, and easy, a key component for me.

Buffalo Joe Guide School Training

30 05 2012

I just spent the last 10 days with our new guide training class. A lot of time was spent bouncing off rocks and practicing highsides through Pinball, however I have been quite impressed with this class compared to others. Guide school consists of rafting everyday; learning everything from paddle techniques and commands and boat rigging, whitewater swimming and flipping to outdoor cooking and Leave No Trace practices. During out first phase of training, qualified trainers (Curtis and I) are on the boats with them everyday teaching, commenting and sometimes relaxing. The second phase of training will include lots of ‘turkey boats’ (just the rooks by themselves) and ride-a-longs with senior guides. Give these kids another couple weeks and we’ll make raft guide out of them yet!

1st Buffalo Joe’s trip of the season!

5 05 2012

Beautiful weather and an astounding rise in cfs in the last two  days made our first trip of the season a great success. A two-boat AM half day from Fisherman’s Bridge to Hecla Junction at about 580 cfs. It was real nice to be on the water again!

3200 on the Gauley?? :)

30 08 2011

It appears that the Army Corps of Engineers has decided that there is enough water in the Summersville Lake to release a little more water this year. 3200 cfs, instead of 2800 for the last 4 weeks. There will also be a couple 6-7 day release weeks as described in this link, Sept. 19-Oct 3. I believe this is the year the lake will be drained. Lost Gauley anyone? the section traditionally underwater and ‘lost.’

Gauley Season is Coming!

15 08 2011

I will be leaving Colorado in almost exactly 2 weeks and heading to Fayetteville, WV for Gauley season. The Gauley is a dam release river and only runs 22 days a year. It will start on the Friday after Labor Day and run Fri-Mon for 5 weekends and then a Sat-Sun release on the 6th weekend. The Gauley is a world-class river, #7 in the world by some ratings. The Upper Gauley section is the prize and features 5 Class V rapids, Insignificant, Pillow Rock (I’ll describe this as the ‘perfect’ rapid), Lost Paddle, Iron Ring and Sweet’s Falls. Officially today is the last day of Arkansas water. We’re not totally sure if the dams upstream will actually cut off our flows today or not but regardless I got Gauley on the mind.

Pine Creek Season is Good to Go

8 08 2011

Traditionally the Arkansas’ water cuts off on Aug. 15th. We are still waiting to see if that is actually going to happen this year. Regardless, just this week, better late than never, Buffalo Joe’s is starting to run Pine Creek trips. Pine Creek rapid is one of the last rapids in the Granite Gorge just before the Numbers put-in and is the only commercial class V rapid on the Ark. We don’t run up there above 1000 cfs, pine creek rapid’s commercial cut-off. Above piney is the Granite Gorge which is full of super-fun class III and IV rapids like Maytag and Bitchin’ el Camino. Give us a hollar if you want to get down, realistically it might only last a week!

Seidel’s Suckhole at 2200!

20 07 2011

2200-2400 is probably the nastiest level for Seidel’s Suckhole. The high water left line is possible but questionable. The right line is tough. Here are some photos from the hole.

4th 3800 Peak of the Summer

12 07 2011

Toby said it best on the bus today as we rolled back into BV on the Buffalo Joe’s bus. “We run the Numbers, but at this point who knows?” Maybe it’s the rain, maybe its the water that is being pumped over from Aspen, the monkeys pushing buttons at the dam upstream, who knows. What we do know is that it is July 12th and the Arkansas River is still at 3800cfs. Epic.

I just finished an awesome double-dip Brown’s overnight trip. Hollar to Mark, Emma, Brett and Heather for a sick trip, full of hot lines! Here’s some photos from Canyon Doors where we had our second day lunch.

High Water Grins

1 07 2011

It’s absolutely incredible that we’re heading into July 4th weekend and the water is still so high. It rained for really the first time this year yesterday. My trip ran into a full downpour just after jump rock, good thing we were wet anyway. The rain is refreshing; although the mountains still have record amounts of snow on them, the valley is still in a full-on drought. We have been in a fire ban for several weeks now, something I’ve never seen in Chaffee County. The rain also gave us a little boast in CFS today, back to 3700 on the dot at 10am this morning. Now it is unlikely we actually got enough rain to add that amount of flow, but that amount of rain could have melted additional snow in the mountains giving our natural tributaries, Cottonwood and Chalk Creeks, some more water.

Everyday I’ve been telling my crews about the ‘high water grin’; big waves and quick days keep raft guide moral on high. Here are some shots from Seidels Suckhole on Tuesdays that just gets ya a little giddy. My overnight crew and I pulled our lunch up to the tracks and sat for about an hour and a half enjoying the show.

John, Kyle, Andy and Andrew; I can’t thank you guys enough for the stellar trip! We spent 2 days eatin’ fat and getting face shots from the whitewater. Lots-o-firsts haha! We’ll get after those Numbies next time for sure. Here are some of the photos I took as well as the ‘hot lines’ you posted on facebook! Thanks again fellas, see you next time!!
