I will be leaving Colorado in almost exactly 2 weeks and heading to Fayetteville, WV for Gauley season. The Gauley is a dam release river and only runs 22 days a year. It will start on the Friday after Labor Day and run Fri-Mon for 5 weekends and then a Sat-Sun release on the 6th weekend. The Gauley is a world-class river, #7 in the world by some ratings. The Upper Gauley section is the prize and features 5 Class V rapids, Insignificant, Pillow Rock (I’ll describe this as the ‘perfect’ rapid), Lost Paddle, Iron Ring and Sweet’s Falls. Officially today is the last day of Arkansas water. We’re not totally sure if the dams upstream will actually cut off our flows today or not but regardless I got Gauley on the mind.
